Martin Scorsese Personal journey through American Film is a documentary that takes you through American cinema and depicts his personal relation and opinion on each one. He comments on many different films which cover all types of themes and genres and how they have progressed and changed throughout the years, audiences reactions and how each one personally effected him as a director. Throughout this documentary he reviews and compares a variety of successful directors and film makers that have influenced him such as Vincente Minnelli, Charlie Chaplin, and John Ford, as well as including interviews with other cinema influencers. To explain his relationship with these films and give the audience watching a further sense of understanding he showed scenes from each film. He tells his story through genre and directors rather then going through movies chronologically so that he can fully compare all elements not just the directors, actors and producers. He also tackles subjects such as lighting, sound and colour and how these aspects of film have changed and developed over the years giving his opinion on this too.
I believe that this documentary is highly educational and interesting as it gives people scope on really how much goes into making films. It tackles many different subject areas and not only teaches watchers the history of film but also gives opinions from one of the most successful and talented American film artists. I think that within the way he spoke about each film as an outsiders perspective it is clear he has thought about each analysis with precision and without bias and therefore given and honest and educational opinion.
