The film Scarlet Empress, follows the story of a young princess who was bought to Russia to marry her nephew, Duke Peter and produce a male heir to the throne. Her marriage is lifeless and sad and Neither Pete or Catherine are happy within the marriage. Peter strays away from her and once the wedding night is over doesn’t sleep with her or show affection towards her as he spends most of his time with his mistress or his soldiers. The man who bought her to Russia, Count Alexei, peruses her despite the fact his is a womaniser and a selfish man. In the end after being messed around by the royals Catherine becomes the empress and peter is killed. I feel that this film has a very interesting plot and follows the realities of the struggles of royal women at this time. I feel that it follows important themes of women being mistreated sand its nice to see a film that is advocating for women’s rights throughout the plot. The end of the film is empowering as she becomes the empress despite the way that the men in this film have treated her and the way she rides away is a conclude to the film.
The costumes are very eccentric and are all beautifully detailed. The create large structures and beaded details. This adds a nice feel to the film as it makes it adds to the royal plot and accentuates their financial situation compared to the rest of the people at this time.
