The Naked Civil Servant is a film adapted from the memoir of Quentin Crisp. It tells his story and how he pushed to unapologetically embrace his nature and be the flamboyant, homosexual individual that he was. This film is set in the 1930’s and 1940’s which evidently caused uproar amongst the conservative society that he was surrounded by. He was victim to a lot of abuse due to his character and as much as he tried to be himself and support this decision he was eventually arrested.
I think that this film is a refreshing reminder of how far society has come with acceptance of homosexuality but also makes one consider how far we as a society have yet to go. I liked that it sparked questions and visited a concept that can be controversial amongst certain people. The film, I felt was well written and successfully captured the personality of Crisp himself with his objection to take things seriously which made him a very laid back and wittful character however also capturing the tenancy he had to indulge in self pity due to his lack of self awareness and they did this in such a way that was convincing to an auditive member.
I felt that the ensemble characters could have had more written into them as they seemed very black or white in the sense that the disagreement with Crisps characteristics between each character all seemed the same and it would have been nice to see deeper character development amongst these characters.
Overall I felt it to be an interesting and thought provoking film which I enjoyed watching and it made me realise that we still have so much more progress to make within making the homosexuality community to feel welcome, accepted and loved by all types of people.
