Understanding the making of a Top Hat

anyadaya

To begin making my Top Hat I scoured some scrap fabric, cardboard and lining fabric.

I began by shaping the cardboard into a curve so that I could create the rim of my hat.

I then I cut the lining fabric on the bias so that I could stretch the fabric around the rim so its tightly covered and there are no air bubbles or folds in the space between the fabric and the cardboard and glue it with fabric glue so that it is secure and isn't going to move.

I then dis the same with the top fabric to cover the rim and glues the bias over my lining.

I then cut a circle out of cardboard to be my tip. To cover the tip of the hat you are meant to create a gather stitch to curve around the cardboard and then you glue it.

Once you have the two pieces covered you then whip stitch them together. so that they are secure and aren't going to come apart.

I liked the fabric I used and enjoyed the process of mounting it all together. If I was to do it again I would probably try and make it a bit neater. I would also embellish it with some trims and beaming to make the hat look more interesting and unique.
